Shameka Willis, team lead for the DukeWELL Referral Hub, was nominated for the 2024 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Humanitarian Award. This award (formerly known as the Community Caregiver Award) honors Duke faculty, staff, and administrators for their outstanding service in keeping with the principles of Dr. King. This year's theme, “It starts with me…” encapsulates the profound notion of personal empowerment and responsibility that each of us plays in fostering positive change, belonging, and equity as Duke Health team members.
Shameka was nominated for her work creating Passionate Purpose, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating a safe and nurturing environment for children, teens, and their role models. She has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to humanitarianism, leadership, and service.
This nomination is a testament to the values Shameka upholds and the hard work she consistently puts into making a difference. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” Shameka's actions clearly embody the spirit of his message, and her efforts have not gone unnoticed.
We're proud of you, Shameka!
